As a writer, Aditya Chopra abandons verdant Swiss locations and bases his romantic enterprise in the narrow bylanes of Amritsar this time. Instead of a rich and happy NRI scion, he takes up the case of a mundane nine-to-five office-goer who keeps saying, “Surinder Sahni (Shah Rukh) this side from Punjab Power - lighting up your life jee!” The nerd finds himself invited to vivacious Taani’s (Anushka Sharma) wedding by her professor father. This nerd used to be his favourite student.

Calamity strikes all of a sudden as the baraat (opposite wedding party) perishes in an accident. The young bride-to-be is heartbroken while her father suffers a massive cardiac arrest and before passing away hands over his daughter to his fave student. Surinder, with his grey trousers, full-sleeved checked shirts, sports shoes and huge spectacles knows that he can’t win over his pretty bride. Steps in salon owner buddy Bobby Khosla (Vinay Pathak). Togged garishly in psychedelic shirts and cuckatoo hair, he gives Surinder an instant makeover. Transformed into a cool dude wearing tight tees and tighter jeans, he passes himself off as Raj. The overnight makeover is so effective that even his wife isn’t able to recognise him as he joins up her dance class and ends up as her partner. Totally wooed by his flirtatious ways, she forgets to inform him about her marital status (!!) and takes monsoon bike rides with Raj and places wagers on eating panipuris with him.

Taani is so besotted with Raj that she agrees to dump her ‘boring’ husband and elope with him. But obviously she cannot - that would be sacrilegious. The writer resolves her dilemma by equating the selfless husband and the nerd redeems himself while sacrificing the hip avatar.
